Your Guide to Heat Pump Installation

Do you know what to expect on the day of your Heat Pump installation? Despite choosing the company and signing the contract, customers generally do not have a clear idea about what’s in store.

The installation is crucial for the best performance and efficiency of your Heat Pump. It requires specific airflow, hence the installer will consider factors such as window placement, ventilation, and your living habits in the air-conditioned space.

Placing the indoor unit in a corner or hallway will harm performance. The best technical location may not be the best aesthetically or symmetrically. The outdoor unit should be where it has minimal exposure to elements, dust, and debris. Avoid putting it near trees that shed leaves or in a dirty or overgrown area to prevent poor performance from dirt and blockage.

The outdoor unit should have ample free space on either side for airflow and maintenance access. It should be installed on a sturdy base such as a wall or concrete slab and be within 15 meters of the indoor air outlet for maximum efficiency.

Here’s a summary of a typical Split System Heat Pump installation to familiarize you with the process on installation day.

Step 1: Indoor Unit Mounting- In a Split System Heat Pump installation process, the first component to install is the indoor unit. The installer will secure the mounting bracket to the interior wall based on the pre-installation inspection. This bracket will hold the Heat Pump in the chosen location.

Step 2: Wall Hole Drilling- After the bracket is mounted, the next step is drilling a hole in the wall to connect the indoor unit to the outdoor condenser.

Step 3: Wiring- With the wall hole in place, it’s time to connect the Heat Pump by running pipes and wiring through the hole. The installer will secure the connections with electrical tape and protect them with a tube.

Step 4: Installation- The mounting is complete, and the wiring and piping are ready. Now it’s time to install the indoor unit. The process is similar to connecting two Lego pieces. Once it is in place, the installer will connect the pipes and wiring from step 3 to the back of the indoor unit.

Step 5: Outdoor Installation- The outdoor condenser unit is responsible for absorbing heat from the environment and transferring it into the home via a refrigerant. For ground-level spaces, the outdoor unit will be mounted onto existing pavers or a newly laid concrete slab using mounting feet. In the case of second-floor or high-rise apartment installations, the unit will be attached to a secure mounting bracket on the building’s exterior.
